Cold Feet
Post by gixxerflier on Dec 23, 2008, 9:38am
Hello again northern cousins,
Down here in Asheville, NC we've been getting everything from 8 to 60+ degrees this month.
Although I've been here now 10 years I'm an original Florida boy and still haven't gotten the winter riding dialed. I want to push on through (both road and mtb) and come out stronger in spring, but have real bad circulation in my hands and feet.
Have heard the plastic bags idea and will try it, but it seems sketchy to have soaked feet.
Any tips?
Thanks in advance and Happy Holidays.
Andrew

Hi Andrew,
Cold weather riding shoes+wool socks+hot shots+booties or just switch to platform pedals with skate shoes or hiking boots. For the hands lobster gloves work well.

For slightly cold weather, say down to 20F or so I go with a larger clipless boot style shoe and wear wool socks. You can go a bit colder if you use hot shots.
Stoner, and others, go with ankle high cycling shoes and use neoprene booties if it gets really cold and then maybe use hot shots if it gets really really cold.
When it gets really really cold thought I personally preferr the platform pedal + larger skate shoe option + warm socks. This is usually good down to -10 F or so.

Platforms, hiking boots, regular riding socks and GoreTex socks. Stay warm AND dry.

Anything below about -3 and i use neoprene booties over my regular cycling shoes and i always use hotshots. You can get the foot specific ones up here at Canadian tire for 1.25$ a pair and it guarntees toasty toes. I wear wool socks year round. The curse of having cold, sweaty feet!

Thanks guys. I don't know why, but my neoprene booties make my feet colder.
I've got bad circulation to my extremities anyway so winter is just painful. Road riding is worst as around here you'll usually climb an hour straight in 20- 30 degrees f. and be down to shorts/ jersey then have to descend for 20 mins. in full gear freezing.
I'll check out the hotshots and other ideas.
Anybody want my opinion on snow riding on a 29er?
