Night ride lightsPost by kamorant on Sept 25, 2008, 1:52pm
Hey gang, I'd like to attend a night ride sometime, but I need a light!
Any recommendations?
Do you use a handlebar light, or helmet or?
Thanks
Karl

Lights do help at night. Helmet and bar is the best way to go. Helmet gets the better/brighter/lighter light.
LED looks to be the way to go. Which system will depend on $$$$ you want to spend.
Don't forget a rear light as well, not one that flashes for that will drive the persons behind you over the edge.

hey guys,
I have a guy that hand bulids light here in Timmins, these are supreme light for the money. For a 150.00 you get light, charger and battery. They have night rider bulbs 15 watts and are made of abs pipe that is molded in a cool shape ! I ride twice daily in the wintey on lights and they are now 4 yrs old and they have never failed. My 5 lights that I purchased this year comes with led lights on the side and the back for maximum safety ! I will post pictures later on !
watch for the lights !

Both handlebar light and helmet light is best. Handlebar light gives a better perception of depth due to the shadows cast. Helmet light is good for switchbacks and seeing corners.
I currently use a DIY 20W halogen light. One 20W on the handlebar, one 20W on the helmet. LEDs have definitely improved in the last 2 years, and are now the way to go. Hence, I'm now working on a DIY LED setup that'll put my halogens to shame

I almost always ride with only one light (and a little penlight for backup). I used to think that handlebar lights were the way to go but tried a helmet light about 5 years ago and definitely prefer this. I think that's true for most, if you are going to have only 1 light, a helmet light is better.
Sewerurchin has some impressive lights, i look forward to seeing his DYI LED set-up.

Hey,
I use a handlebar and a helmet. I would recommend that. I would much rather have two $200 lights than one $400 light. If you really have to have one light I would put it on my helmet for Guelph Lake, Twinponds, Waterdown, etc and would put it on my handlebar for Hilton.
I bought some Light & Motion Halogens. I have been very impressed with my lights. I just went over to the L&M website and they don't sell halogen anymore nor do they sell HID - it appears they're all LED now.
cool
Paul

What is this L&M website you speak off? What is the full address?
$200,00 lights? Are you serious?
Thanks.

Dinotte has been getting lots of good reviews for their 200L, 400L, 600L, and now 800L LED mtb lights.
http://store.dinottelighting.com200L-AA-L-B: 200 lumens, helmet mount, AA batteries - $163.77.
They claim that it's equivalent to a 15-20W halogen which is a bit of stretch. Lumen wise, it's more like a good 10W halogen light. However, since the eye perceives blue and white better at night then yellow, it appears brighter. So it's more like a 15W halogen light.
------------------------------
However, there is an even cheaper alternative commercial light that I'm currently testing. 400-700 lumens for $65 (includes taxes, shipping, batteries, etc). Until I've fully tested it, I won't recommend it yet or comment anymore on it.

I bought a BlackBurn helmet lamp from Braun's yesterday. The sales guy "Russel" was very knowledgeable. They had a 25% off sale on lights, actually they have varying sales on everything.
I hope to try the light out very soon.
